How High Is Too High?

A federal minimum wage of $15 or $25 dollars an hour, sounds great in theory and if the United states government federally raised the minimum wage then it would put an end to almost all problems. However, that is wrong, in actuality drastically increasing the federal minimum wage has shown to present negative consequences for all types of people. Furthermore, the 2020 election is on its way and raising minimum wage is a prominent topic among many of the running candidates. Therefore, being well educated on a relevant topic that would affect a large faction of the country is important, which is why I chose to research it. The research I found changed my initial thought on the topic and maybe it will change yours too. High minimum wages should be determined by the free-market, and not federally established.

Current State and Federal Wages

The federal minimum wage for the United States is $7.25 per hour but many states have their own minimum wage that is higher than the federal minimum wage. Seattle, Washington was the first state in the US to increase their minimum wage from $11 dollars an hour to $12.00 per hour in 2016.

How A Federally Increased Minimum Wage Can Affect All

Here shows several ways that increasing the minimum wage can make housing and consumer goods more expensive. There is also some data that was pulled from Seattle, Washington that displays how employee hours were cut back by 6.9 percent which then cut into low wage workers earnings by approximately $125 dollars per month.

Its Not One Size Fits All

This gives a better idea/example on why the free-market should determine the minimum wage rather than establishing a federal minimum wage for all. Each state and company is different in its own way; therefore, a significant flat line wage would not work.

Almost all would argue for everyone to live a comfortable and dignified life, including myself; however, a careful balance is critical when trying to achieve such a significant goal and despite how appealing a rapid establishment of a high minimum wage like $15 dollars an hour is, it is important to analyze the picture as a whole.A high federally established minimum wage can drive consequences that affect almost all, which is why the minimum wage should be determined accordingly and by the free market.

A Different Solution

One of the most effective and efficient ways we can achieve such a important goal for all in my opinion is the following. Supporting government sponsored programs that give low wage workers, with little experience, the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience which they can use to obtain better jobs/careers. This route gives people knowledge that they can use forever, rather than putting them at risked of being laid off with an increased minimum wage.
