Ronaldo vs Spain

Portugal 3–3 Spain

Julen Lopetegeui sits on his couch and smiles as Cristiano Ronaldo’s freekick hovers over the Spanish defenders and into the top right corner of the net, leaving De Gea to reflect on his life twice in an hour.

I think it’s time for Lionel Messi fans (myself included) to stand up and clap for Cristiano Ronaldo. Yes, he may be selfish and throw tantrums like a child. But he still carried the Portuguese for ninety plus minutes against a Spanish side that was rearing to go from the start. Were we witness to the best World Cup group game of all time, well that’s quite obvious isn’t it? The Iberian derby has now set a standard for international football, and this should probably spur other teams in the tournament as forces to be reckoned with early on. If one thing is for certain, the qualifying teams from this years group B have been decided, despite Iran soaking in the fact that they top the group until the end next round of fixtures.

Now, the details. I haven’t personally witnessed a player as motivated to be on the ball as Cristiano Ronaldo. While the Spanish team’s triangles and exploitation of pockets were a factor that lead to the Portuguese units defensive lapses, Ronaldo, despite the heavy marking was lingering on the other end like a sort of outbreak that couldn’t be contained. The Spaniards were comfortably the better side holding most of the ball and having three more shots on target than their neighbours. It was especially enticing to watch Ronaldo have the last laugh over a lot of his teammates from the Galácticos.

Once the dust from this defeat finally settles, Spain will look to regroup and take advantage of the fact that their chemistry is something that the other teams participating envy. When you’re giving Cristiano some flashbacks of an El Clasico by holding the ball for periods of up to two minutes or more, you know you’re doing something right. David De Gea won’t be sleeping easy tonight as he joins the list of goalkeepers who let it slip, meanwhile Loris Sven Karius breathes a sigh of relief. Some of the main talking points of this fixture would be the Catalan domination and the fact that they attack the opposition box in numbers, Cristiano Ronaldo’s fiery hattrick which puts him in contention for the golden boot regarded he can withstand the pressure of being the core of the Portuguese squad and quite obviously the fact that it’s only been a handful of games and Russia is the place to be!
