4 Totally Free Resources Every Beginner Freelance Writer Should Know

Starting out is not easy, but it can be made simpler with these free resources at hand.

Often when I mention to friends or family I’m currently a freelance writer, they wonder how I got started. It wasn’t the easiest walk in the park, but these 4 resources proved invaluable in my journey on learning how to become a well-payed freelance writer (still a work in progress!).

While not essential for all fields of freelance writing, it’s always a good idea to brush up on your knowledge of the latest Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practices.

Topics range from writing effective blog posts to sales and email marketing. There is a lot to explore and benefit from, and you can even mention your Hubspot certificate on your resume.

One of my favorite quotes from here: start right out recognizing that you are a business and not an employee. The great part of this type of work is that YOU decide. You may have to make compromises in the beginning to get some cash flowing, but keep them as small as possible.

That’s right. Starting out, it’s great to see examples of what excellent and clean writing looks like, and usually that can be found in well-known publications such as TIME magazine, Forbes, Business Insider, CNET, and others.

When I need to write about a tech or health-related topic, every so often I may open these online publications to see if I can find anything I can get inspiration from. Whether it is in tone, terminology, or style, there is plenty to learn from the writing behind these articles.

Freelance writing is a vast field that can be overwhelming to navigate between all the resources out there. Whether you would like to write blog posts or tackle corporate white papers, the above resources have something for everyone.

While the wealth of information online can help you along the way, the best step you can take to becoming a successful freelance writer is to just start writing and build up that portfolio!
