WHY DO HIGH ACHIEVERS AND SOME ENTREPRENEURS SUCCEED?

One of the answers is that they have an extremely strong drive. This strong drive is also of an constructive character. How come that some people have stronger and more constructive drives than others? There is research from children who suffered the loss of a parent at an early age and later in life made outstanding achievements, suggesting that mental ability is greatly influenced by emotional motivation. A survey of British entrepreneurs showed that 30 per cent had lost a parent before the age of fifteen, compared to an average of 8 per cent in the general population. The same tendency was found looking at the arts, science and popular music. This was interpreted as a lifetime struggle to repair damaged self-esteem and to prove one´s worth to the world. The mastery of these feelings, especially depression, was seen as a springboard for immense compensatory energies and the source of strivings for accomplishment, status, power or wealth.

As early as 1906 the well known American psychologist William James said:” most people live, physically, intellectually and morally in a very narrow circle of their potential. Katrastrofies and crises shows us how much greater our vital resources are than we thought.”

From this follows that some people can benefit from their adversities. That is if you have the resources to tackle them. Some people just become depressed or criminal. If you have had a fairly normal childhood you have developed a resilience that helps you heel the wound. But in addition to that you are not so afraid of taking risks, since you know that you can stand the failure. You are not afraid of the pain connected with adversities, because you know that you can stand it, and if you persist you stand a good chance of winning in the end.

This, I believe, are some of the factors contributing to success.
